I reported to you months ago that I was trying to finally be finished with my living room. I said that all I had left to do was put some art on the walls. Well that was all totally WRONG!!!! I have been realizing that this room is so WRONG. I did pick an accent colour. A pretty teal blue. Bought a few little bits and pieces like pillows, a teal glass bowl for the coffee table, some teal candles and a new grey area rug with a bit of teal in it. OK great. But this room is still not working. It is the totally awkward shape of the room. It is my husbands GIANT recliner chair. It is the fireplace in the middle of the only long wall that sticks out into the room. It is the GIANT TV. All of the above. I have slowly realized that I need professional help. There is nothing wrong with calling for help, is there? So I called an interior designer for a consultation and help with the placement of furniture in this room. I have realized that I am going to have to replace one or two pieces of furniture. There has to be a way to make this room better. I had planned to do a bit of a refresh on the master bedroom. So in view of my total failure with the living room, I am going to keep the master changes to a minimum so I can put those funds into the main living area. I am going to just get new curtains and paint the dressers and call it a day in the bedroom.
OK, the designer has been here! She was worth her weight in gold! She started by clearing everything out of the room including the carpet. Once she had a blank slate, she put little slider things under the furniture and started putting things back in. She kept trying things and then changing them. After about an hour of this we ended up with an arrangement that I never would have come up with in a million years. So happy I called her. I was worried that she would be wanting me to replace everything we owned. But she was all about using things we already have as much as possible. I knew our big sofa would have to go, so that was no surprise. We decided I need a smaller sofa with a chaise on it instead. So off I went to shop for that. I was focused on looking for a sofa with a chaise, but when I got into the store they had a sofa of the size I was looking for without a chaise but they had paired it with a matching ottoman. When I saw that arrangement I knew it was the answer. The ottoman can be used as a chaise for me or put a tray on it and it’s a coffee table. Genius! I still have to get one small round end table. I will buy a vintage one of those for not much money. One piece of art for the wall and we are done. I have an old wooden chair now in the room which I may replace with a slipper chair but that is no rush. I just love the new layout. We relocated a cabinet to another room and repurposed another item. I know now that this awkward room is finally arranged the way it should be. So trust me folks, you gotta know when to call for help! I am sure glad I did!
