We have had a bit of a nasty winter here on the west coast this year. I know, I know it is not nearly as bad as in some other parts of the country but for us it is nasty OK? So there have been days on end where we did not leave the house. After all we are retired, so why go out when it is nasty when we don’t have to? We have decided not to take a trip this winter. So there have been some days of watching the idiot box in my pyjamas. Kind of heavenly. But what to watch? I really cannot deal with daytime TV. So we are down to the CBC’s 24 hour news channel or HGTV. But just in the nick of time when we were ready to smash the TV with a hammer, our cable provider added GUSTO. It has been on preview and just ended. It has a lot of cooking programs which I don’t watch a lot of but it also has renovation programs from the UK. These people take the most derelict 200 or 300 year old houses and restore them. They also have historians that research who built the homes and who lived there and what they were all about. I quite like this stuff. Husband not so much, he goes into the garage and putzes about in there. So these shows have saved the day for me for sure. I cannot bear to watch American talk shows or news programs. Cannot stand them! I also cannot watch any more Donald Trump. It seems to me that if the Russians or anybody else has tampered with the election, then it should be void and they need to vote again. But whatever. I do like the CBC for straightforward reporting of the real facts. I like a lot of CBC programming. But I have to say I enjoyed GUSTO and have added it on to our cable.
Again in the evening I cannot bear to watch about 80% of the American programming. I do watch a lot of PBS or knowledge network programming. Love it. I would much rather watch a 10 year old episode of Midsommer Murders than an American network program. I am a Canucks fan and we all know how that is going. Another saving grace for us has been Netflix. We can always find a movie or a made for Netflix series that isn’t bad. A lot of these are quite well done. The latest Netflix series I have been binge watching have been The Crown, Stranger Things and The Fall. There are also some older series that I never did watch when I was working, so there is an opportunity to catch up on some things I missed.
So I think it might be time to get rid of a lot of the channels we now pay for, as we don’t watch them very often anymore and just pay for the things that we actually watch. It’s on my to do list for the new year. It is a small way to save a bit of money out of the budget so when the weather improves we can do other things. We still have work to do in the back yard, so any savings is good. Hey maybe I will even think about nixing the land line and just go with the cell phone like so many others are doing these days. What is that saying, “take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves”.
